PANEL: Keeping It Real: Marketing and Selling Independent Hip-Hop
Thursday, March 18, 5:00 p.m., Austin Convention Center.
Featuring Invincible (EMERGENCE), John Shaw (Select-O-Hits Music Distribution), Dan Solomito(The Stadium), Michael Watts (SwishaHouse), Saeed Crumpler (BALANCE). A lot of attention is given to the few major label rappers who are able to break through into the mainstream, but it's the thriving underground hip-hop subculture that breeds these artists and keeps the genre alive. Acts are generally signed after toiling for years independently, and many choose to remain independent even when offers are placed on the table. Artists will discuss the ways to maintain their independence and thrive in the era of ringtone rap.

Omar Offendum, Ragtop & the Narcicyst have snuck their unique blend of culture, beats and lyrics to secret audiences from the Middle East to North America and beyond. Originally from Syria, Palestine and Iraq respectively, the hip-hop trio can't go anywhere without security tailing. Their phones are tapped, their digital identities compromised, and they walk the shadows between here and there, past and present, consciousness and dreaming...they are THE PARANOIDS.
